With scenic trails, unspoiled beaches, and breathtaking ocean cliff paths, Cape Elizabeth is a nature lover’s paradise, no matter the season. Whether you’re out for a stroll in the summer sun or exploring snowy trails in the winter, the picturesque surroundings of this coastal town are ready to be explored on foot. Here are some of our top trail recommendations, all of which are family- and pet-friendly.
Crescent Beach
Crescent Beach is a serene, mile-long stretch of sand that offers spectacular views of Richmond Island and the gentle Atlantic. The beach is an ideal spot for both winter walks and summer sunbathing. In the warmer months, you can enjoy swimming in the light surf, while in the cooler months, the beach transforms into a peaceful retreat. Wooded trails meander through the park, offering easy hikes just steps from the beach. During winter, these trails are perfect for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Guests of Inn by the Sea can access the beach via a private boardwalk. Please note that dogs are welcome from October to April, but not during the summer nesting season.
Great Pond
For wildlife enthusiasts, the Great Pond trail is a must-visit. This 125-acre freshwater pond is surrounded by trails filled with wildflowers and wildlife. Located just a short distance from the Inn, the trail offers a leisurely walk through the woods, with a scenic overlook of the pond and marshland. An elevated boardwalk allows you to explore the pond’s edges while observing the local flora and fauna, including ducks, deer, and beavers. Derrick Daly, the Inn’s head gardener, also offers guided morning walks for guests and their dogs during the summer. Afterward, make sure to stop by Kettle Cove Dairy for a refreshing ice cream treat!
Cliff Walk at Fort Williams
A short half-mile walk along the coast, the Cliff Walk at Fort Williams offers breathtaking views of Casco Bay and the nearby islands. This easy walk takes you through the historic remains of Fort Williams and past Portland Headlight, Maine’s oldest lighthouse. The lighthouse, commissioned by George Washington, is a favorite subject of renowned artist Edward Hopper. The trail is also a popular spot for winter activities such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and sledding. The Cliff Walk is just a 10-minute drive from Inn by the Sea, and leashed dogs are welcome along the route.
Robinson Woods
For a more immersive experience in nature, the Robinson Woods trail network offers three miles of paths through forests, fields, wetlands, and ponds. The towering red oaks, hemlocks, and white pines—some over 300 years old—create a stunning canopy above, while the forest floor is home to lush fern groves and vernal pools. This diverse trail system is perfect for those looking to “forest bathe,” offering peace and solitude. The trailhead is just a five-minute drive from the Inn, and dogs are welcome off-leash during designated hours.
