Is Tangier’s Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Worth the Ride?
If you’re planning a trip to Tangier, you might notice that some of the most notable attractions aren’t located in the city center but rather on the outskirts. Navigating through Tangier’s somewhat unreliable public transportation system can be a challenge, and taxi fares can quickly add up. So, how do you get to these key sights without the hassle?
One convenient option might be the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus, and in this post, I’ll share my experience with this tour service, including ticket details, routes, and recommendations for must-see stops along the way.
Affordable Tickets and Easy Access
Unlike other cities where hop-on-hop-off tours can be quite expensive, Tangier offers relatively affordable tickets. A single adult ticket costs around 130 MAD (approximately 13 euros), and you can easily purchase it online, through tour operators, or directly at the Tangier port. Tickets for kids between 6 and 14 years old are half the price, and children under 5 can ride for free.
Once you purchase your ticket, you’ll receive a digital voucher with a QR code, but keep in mind that this does not grant you immediate access to the bus. You will need to exchange this for a physical ticket at the kiosk by the Port de Tanger Ville, where all tours start. It’s essential to hold onto your printed ticket, as you’ll need it to reboard at any stop along the way.
What’s Included in Your Ticket?
With your ticket, you get access to two separate audio-guided tours, which are available in multiple languages. You can explore each route at your own pace within a 48-hour period, starting from the moment you purchase your ticket. Earphones are provided so you can listen to the audio guides throughout the journey.
The Buses: Decent but Not Spectacular
The buses are functional, though not particularly luxurious. The seats are made of plastic, and we encountered a couple of issues, such as faulty earphone plugs. That said, the views from the top deck were fantastic, and the audio guides were engaging and informative, which made up for the bus’s shortcomings.
Tangier Ville Route: A Quick City Tour
The Tangier Ville route takes about an hour and covers some of the city’s most famous landmarks. The tour departs from Port de Tanger Ville and stops at several spots, including Place 9 Avril, Palais Moulay Hafid, and the Mosquée Mohammed V, among others. While the tour is enjoyable, many of these sites are easily accessible by foot or public transportation, so unless you’re keen to learn more about their history, this route might not be essential for everyone.
The Grottes d’Hercule Tour: The Highlight of the Trip
The real gem of the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus tour is the Grottes d’Hercule route. This tour lasts about two hours and takes you out to some of Tangier’s most beautiful and unique spots. The route passes through Socco Alto, Parc Perdicaris, Cap Spartel, and the Hercules Caves, returning via the same stops.
While some stops, like Socco Alto (just a shopping mall), and Jardin Donabo (not particularly remarkable), might not be worth your time, there are several standouts worth exploring.
Parc Perdicaris
This large, scenic park is a peaceful oasis with trails and breathtaking views of the sea. The park is popular with locals, especially on weekends, where you’ll often see families enjoying picnics and children playing. If you’re interested in history, you can also visit Villa Perdicaris, which was the site of the 1904 kidnapping of Ion Perdicaris, known as the “Perdicaris Affair.” With its trails and beautiful natural surroundings, Parc Perdicaris is a great place to spend several hours.
Cap Spartel
Cap Spartel is a picturesque promontory at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. The highlight here is the Cap Spartel lighthouse, where you can enjoy panoramic views of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. There’s a small entrance fee to climb the lighthouse, which also includes access to a nearby botanical garden. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can explore the cliffs and trails around the lighthouse, but be careful—they can get steep and a bit treacherous.
Caves of Hercules
Lastly, we visited the famous Caves of Hercules, a well-known tourist spot in Tangier. While the location is scenic, the experience left a lot to be desired. The small cave doesn’t offer much in terms of exploration, and we found the 80 MAD (8 euros) entry fee to be a bit steep for what you get. That said, if you walk down to the rocky beach near the caves, you can explore the area for free, and you’ll get nearly the same view without paying.
Is the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Worth It?
All in all, we found the Tangier Hop-On Hop-Off Bus experience to be worthwhile. It’s affordable, convenient, and allows you to visit several unique and remote locations without the hassle of renting a car. Plus, it’s a huge time saver. If you’re planning to see any of the sights covered by the routes, I’d definitely recommend this option during your time in Tangier.
So, if you’re ready to explore the outskirts of this fascinating city with ease, the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus could be just what you need.
